Welcome to Newport Select Boys Basketball Club (NSBBC)

The NSBBC provides 4th-8th-grade boys that feed into the Newport High School basketball program with an opportunity to develop their basketball skills in a positive, competitive atmosphere that also promotes leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, and a sense of community.

Dear NSBBC Families,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself; my name is Cory Sparling and I have recently stepped into the role of President for the NSBBC Board. I would also like to provide information on changes you can expect for the next season as well as additions to our Board.

I have a deep passion for youth development, basketball, and coaching. I have two sons, incoming 7th and 8th graders who attend Tillicum Middle School, and who have played rec and select sports for the past 10 years. I have had the privilege of coaching many of their teams, several of which your families were a part of. Last year, I had the opportunity to coach a team for NSBBC  which gave me a better understanding of NSBBC’s strengths and weaknesses first hand.

We have several new Board members this year. Ryan Jacques (Treasurer), Chevy Walker (Director of Basketball Operations), Pat Rhatigan (Tournament Chair), and Alicia Jacques and Shari Sparling (Communications & Community Outreach). Marlon will also have a new Board position as Wellness and Training Director. In addition to these changes, here is some information around what to anticipate from this program:

  • Coach Prince was hired as the new Varsity Head Basketball Coach for Newport High School. Our Board had the pleasure of meeting Coach Prince at a meeting in June and he shared his vision and passion for the game and our community.  Coach Prince is focused on supporting our feeder program and sharing best practices with our Coaches to ensure we are aligned on basketball development but more importantly, focused on helping our program develop leadership qualities, self-confidence, and an inner desire to succeed. We will fully embrace his motto of “One Team - One Family" and you’ll see it throughout everything we do moving forward.
  • Over the past several months, we have built a strong Coaching candidate pool and candidates are going through a structured interview process now. We’re also interviewing Assistant Coaches and Volunteers. Every single person we are interviewing has played a collegiate sport, has coached a Youth team, and/or both credentials. Marlon Bailey and Chevy Walker are leading this effort.
  • Please anticipate an NSBBC Night prior to try-outs where families will have the opportunity to meet the new Coaches and Board members. Coach Prince will also be in attendance!
  • Tryouts for the Winter league are being held at the main high school gym in September where players will get to showcase their skills with a full team of head coaches who will provide encouragement, structure and learning opportunities.
  • NSBBC teams will be formed to compete at all levels. Our focus will be placing players in a position to play meaningful minutes, compete, and be successful in multiple leagues and tournaments.

The most exciting opportunity about this upcoming season is being surrounded by a passionate Board who has the desire to affect positive change with this program while having fun.

I look forward to meeting with as many families and players as possible and do not hesitate to reach out to me directly with any questions.

See you in September!

Cory Sparling
